student program

I’ve had so much interest in assisting, mentoring, learning, etc. that I had to start some kind of educational program.  My time is becoming increasingly rare, so future inquiries will be directed here. Scroll all the way down to the comments to see what people have to say about this opportunity!

If you don’t know me already, I’m a full time wedding and portrait photographer supporting a family of four solely with photography.  My journey started way back in the summer of 2000 when I took Photo 1 as an elective in college.  I also have a Master’s degree in Education, experience teaching at the college level, and really do love seeing others learn and develop.

Here is some info about about this experience:

FEE:  $150/year

INCLUDES:

  • First 1:1 learning or mentoring session (2 hours or two 1-hour sessions) that is tailored to your needs.
  • Future lessons or mentoring sessions at only $50 each (approx. 1.5 hours).

Michael Meeks - I just wanted to make a quick comment on here about Brian. I met him a couple of years ago when he was photographing one of my friend’s weddings. We started talking and last year he took me under his wing and I’ve learned a ton from him about the wedding business.
Everything he’s offering here is exactly what he did for me and I can’t tell you enough how valuable it was for me. He’s very transparent (in a good way!) Not only did I get the opportunity to assist on weddings with him but he honestly opened up his books for me to see what he charged, the reasoning behind everything he did and it gave me clear guidelines when I started my own business.
On top of that, Brian and his family are super sweet people and I’m glad to have him as a friend. He’s a very busy man and he works hard every day to make his photography business a success. Look around Lafayette. Look at the other photographers. Brian is obviously producing amazing photographs on a consistent basis for all of his clients. What’s even more important than that, if there can be anything, is that his clients love him.
If you have the chance to take Brian up on his offer, you will have made a very wise choice. Every shoot you go on is basically a free workshop. It really is! And you’ll most likely gain a good friend too.

bp - Wow, Mike :) Was not expecting that! Thanks for the kind words,

Jon Doss - I had to honor of assisting Brian during a wedding shoot this weekend. The first thing I noticed was how intentional he is about his shooting, lighting, etc. He doesn’t just blindly shoot, hoping for a happy accident. He knew what he wanted and would often pull me aside to show me in detail what he was doing.

As the weekend went on, I started to see this same mentality spilling over into other areas of his life. He’s very intentional, and as Mike said above, very transparent about what he does.

I learned more from Brian in this one weekend than I’ve learned assisting in my previous three weddings combined. I’m really not kidding. He is an invaluable resource and an amazing friend.

bp - Aww shucks :)) Thanks for assisting, Jon — you saved my butt a couple times those 3 days!

Jenna Brown - I met Brian when he came to give a speed lighting demo for my photography class at Purdue in January of this year. He came back a few weeks later to talk about strobes. I have also had the chance to assist him at two shoots this year, along with a classmate, and I really don’t have enough nice things to say! Brian has so much information to share and he does it in a way that is very easy to understand. Last year, I would have had no idea how to operate strobes, let alone erect up a lighting set-up and I am learning a great deal from assisting and watching him work. The experience is, in my opinion, something you can’t put a price on. I would recommend for anyone to get in on helping and learning! Especially for us college kids who need as much experience as we can get. Plus, the shoots I’ve been on have been a fun time and never short of laughs! So thanks to Brian for that!

Cori Smyrnis - I met Brian also through Purdue University while he was giving lighting courses. Lighting is definitely not a strong suit of mine, but is absolutely crucial. Through the opportunities I got to assist him with, I have learned so much valuable information not just in lighting but also with lenses and camera settings in general. He is very open about explaining everything he does and I have been able to use this knowledge on almost every shoot I’ve done since. I’ve learned to take a step back and plan out some shots I want to create and then put the pieces together on how to set it up with lights, framing, and focus. I work better with my customers on creating shots that they want while still keeping true to my style of imagery. I cant begin to explain how valuable working with Brian is, I don’t think any price is too much. I have so much fun on every shoot, learn more than any class I’ve taken, and know that I have someone that I can go to if I have an idea that I just cannot wait to try out.

Julie Stetler Correll - I signed up for Brian’s class and just had my first 1 on 1 lesson and I can tell you I was not disappointed! I had been trying to learn photography by watching YouTube and websites I could find that demonstrated photography and my one hour session with Brian gave me more insight than anything I could find. He is very good at what he does and equally good at teaching what he does. I am so green at this and my concern was, can he come down to beginners level and teach me enough to make me understand the basics? Well, I can say with confidence that he is amazing at it. If you are on the fence about signing up for his lessons I hope this review will encourage you to go for it!

Treva Schluttenhofer Mitchell - You are going to do amazing with your new camera

Julie Stetler Correll - Thanks for the confidence boost Treva, I am really enjoying it so far!

Betty Ray Sundqvist - I am proud of you Julie and love you.

Julie Stetler Correll - Thank you mom I love you too!
